in the studio
Here are some projects that are currently underway in the studio. I will update them as things progress. Stay tuned.
These pictures express memories that have come flooding back to me. While they are personal to me, I hope they have a universal appeal and explore what remains in us from childhood.
the intimacy paintings
In this series I am exploring relationship and intimacy. These ideas – especially as I get older – have taken on new meaning in my life. The scale and directness of these pieces underscores the gravity of this subject for me. These paintings look at my internal landscape – my current reality around what relationship and intimacy mean to me as a woman, a wife, a sister, a daughter, a friend, a human being, and an artist.
the emoji project
While the intimacy project (above) was underway, I would often begin the day by creating an emoji that expressed how I was feeling. I had no intentions of growing it into "something". With the constant bombardment of social media and the overuse of the emoji – I wonder how that will effect our ability to express ourselves?
I love the ocean. I seek to express its complexity and vastness in a simplified way. These paintings are the beginning of my search. These works aim to express the expanse of the ocean with scale, collage, color and line. The ocean is omnipresent in coastal Maine, and it’s a place I return to again and again. Although it has given me comfort and stability through the years, at times the water has also felt like a wall, its horizon a solid line that I’m unable to cross. The sea is expansive, but also solid.
